...Earth, somewhere around 3000 AD... I had never actually seen a Bible. We have been taught that there were billions of them before the apocalypse. They have not been necessary since Jesus and his martyred priests have lived amongst us for a thousand years...but now they are being distributed again. We have not known sin. It has been subdued in the presence of our Lord. No one questions authority here. And no one questions truth. We have peace. We have tranquility. I believe we are happy like this. But now we hear stories...of the old worlds. The time has arrived when that old serpent they once called the Devil will be let loose from his chains for a short season. We are to be tested, hence, the Bibles. When I got my Bible I also received a small booklet and a recording. They say it has music on it recorded during the last days of the old world. We have been told that a sorcerous kind of music infested this world and poisoned everything it touched with immorality and perversion. When I inquired as to why some of this music was being given to us I was told a story about death. A dying man will often repent of his wickedness when he knows his death is imminent. Then, in his suffering, he will lose his love for the lies he has followed and, in repentance, speak great truth as to how he arrived at his condition. I am told that this music we have been given is the dying word of a dying civilization as told by one who not only knew it was dying but, more importantly, he knew why. It was called... Because the truth is malleable Let me write a nation's songs, I care not who writes the laws An ominous inscription was found in the destruction of Pompeii, reading in Latin letters “POINIUM CHEREM." Cherem meaning 'excommunication' or 'destruction' in Hebrew. Or perhaps more accurately: purification through annihilation. Poinium can be recognized as the Greek poine, which is similar in meaning to the Latin poena. Which means 'punishment.' The inscription found on the home of a baker is believed to be one of the first expressions of Christianity found outside the Middle East. It is believed the proprieter may have been convinced that the impending destruction of the city was a reward for its promiscuous reputation as well as for Rome's destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The word cherem is a Hebrew word that is translated as 'devoted to God for destruction.' In the context of the book of Joshua, the first city conquered, Jericho, was annihilated. All life present in the city was destroyed. Every man, woman and child (yes, deal with it) was put to the sword. Even the livestock was not spared. The city and everything in it was burned to the ground. Only gold, silver and bronze was taken to be melted and placed into the treasury. The Bible indicates that the destruction authorized for delivery to Jericho and the various inhabitants of Canaan was because of their particular sins (Leviticus 18), and not any sort of ethnic genocide. A Divine judgement of this magnitude is required to use the word cherem. Both the judgement of Noah's day and Mystery Babylon's one hour eradication appear to fit nicely into the concept of cherem as Divine purification. ...And now, as has happened many times throughout history, we come to the point in our presentation known as...The Last Warning... We have all destroyed something we created because, in some way, it disappointed us. Either we hit the delete button on something we wrote or tossed into the trash something that fell short of our expectations. Yet many of you who have made it this far into the presentation at hand are recoiling in horror at what has just transpired. I have told a tale of another creator who would exercise his right to destroy his creation. This creator, of course, is YOUR creator...God. How can you deny to God a right that you exercise freely yourself? Does a creation dictate to its creator? Does the created tell its creator "it is YOU who made me like this?" Who is qualified to sit in judgement of God? Without the life and intellect bestowed upon you by your creator you do not have the foundation to build an ethical charge that can stand. The arrogance of created beings that conspire against their creator, even to denounce his creation, is absurd. Since God is the creator of all life, as well as all that sustains it, who can tell him what he can or cannot do with his creation? Yet we see it every day from hypocritical created beings who delete their own creations and proclaim themselves right and just to do so. Do not artists constantly proclaim their proprietary rights to their art? Can it not be argued that the people who inhabit the world described in this story are owed the punishment delivered to them? They spit at God and hold his name and his words in contempt. They mock him and his worshipers as they set themselves up as examples of virtue and tolerance. They champion the most egregious atrocities such as homosexuality and child sacrifice (antiseptically labeled as abortion) as examples of an evolving progressive morality. If death is the earned wages of sin, is God at fault for destroying a creation that clearly has proclaimed sin as not only a right but an entitlement? Certainly not. Those who would bring accusations against God or his followers clearly have no sense of their own sinfulness or disobedience in the eyes of their creator. They are to be pitied. It is the charge of the great commission to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." However it is not the responsibility of God's people to save the world or anyone in it. We can only bring the word to the people, the people have got to accept the word for themselves. If they choose to reject it, their blood is on their hands. There are those who proudly announce that they do not believe in God. For a created being to deny he is a creation, to his creator, is quite possibly the most foolish action one could take. It looks much like that old poster I used to see of a defiant mouse raising his middle finger upwards at an eagle descending with outstretched talons ready to capture and devour him. Many people find such defiance admirable...but make no mistake...the mouse was eaten. So too will be the result of all the anti-Christian bravado proudly blasphemed against our Holy God. Ours is a merciful God, there is still an opportunity for humility and repentance to alter the time of his final judgement, but be also assured: he will have his way with his creation...Poinium Cherem.
